Megan Menzel enters her 15th year as the head coach of the University of Iowa women’s golf program in 2025-26. Menzel joined the Hawkeyes in August 2011 after serving as a teaching professional at the Denver Country Club from 2009-11.
Menzel led the Hawkeyes to a pair of tournament titles during the 2024-25 season -- the most for the program since the 1999-00 campaign. Iowa won the Diane Thomason Invitational in the fall before playing to a team title at the Nashville Invitational during the spring season. The team finished the season with three top-five finishes.
Paula Miranda, who posted a career-best 74.28 scoring average in 2024-25, finished her career with a 74.93 scoring average over 123.5 rounds. She had four career top 10 and 11 top 20 finishes. Sophomore Ximena Benites got her scoring average into the 70s, finishing with a pair of top 10 and five top 20 showings, while sophomore Maura Peters shaved more than three strokes off her scoring average (79.00 to 75.84) from her freshman to sophomore campaigns.
The Hawkeyes enjoyed a strong 2023-24 season, shooting four of the top 16 54-hole and six of the top 17 rounds in program history. Iowa shattered the school record by 17 strokes, shooting an 847 at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in February. The team had the top two rounds in the record books, shooting a 280 (-8) in round two before bettering it with a final round 279 (-9).
Individually, Menzel coached two players to school 54-hole records. Madison Dabagia and Paula Miranda shot school record 209s (-7) at the Westbrook and Dabagia matched the record the following week, carding a 209 at the UNF Collegiate. Dababia’s 66 tied the school record that was set in 2021.
Dabagia led the team in five tournaments, posting four top 20 and one top 10 finish. Her 73.20 scoring average paced the team and her 73.04 spring scoring average was the best in program history.
With a young team featuring four freshmen and six underclassmen, Menzel guided the Hawkeyes to the postseason for the second time in program history in 2023 when the team accepted an invitation to the National Golf Invitational. Iowa finished as the team runner-up at the NGI and freshman Shannyn Vogler claimed the individual medalist honor, shooting a five-under par 211 to tie the school record that was set in 2016. Vogler’s win was the first by a Hawkeye since 2018.
Iowa’s top four players were all underclassmen — three freshmen, one sophomore. Vogler led the team with a 74.70 scoring average and the Hawkeyes posted four of the top 16 rounds in program history and two of the top six 54 hole team scores. Senior Jordan Amelon was named Iowa athletics’ Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient for the 2022-23 academic year.
During the 2021-22 season, the Hawkeyes posted two of the top 10 rounds in program history. Iowa shot a four-under par 284 at the Chattanooga Classic for the second-lowest round in program history. The team also shot a 287 at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate en route to an 880 54-hole total, which ranked seventh all-time.
Miranda enjoyed a strong first season, posting a 74.74 scoring average during the season. The Mexico native led the team in six tournaments, including finishing as runner-up at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate with a four-under par 212 (72-72-68), which was the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Miranda was named Big Ten Player of the Week for her efforts in Colorado.
Iowa had five student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten honors during the regular season and senior Manuela Lizarazu was Iowa’s recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor.
